A Lucky Spell Before A Lucky Crack At The Cox Plate

Coming off a victory in the Group 3 Hyperion Stakes, the four year old has earned a trip across the country to be part of the nations biggest racing carnival.

His winter campaign saw him victorious in three consecutive races at Group level.

Luckygray put pay to his opposition in the Group 3 Roma Cup by nearly four lengths, followed by a win in the Belmont Sprint and then the Hyperion Stakes.

“I went a bit easy on him in preparation for the Hyperion,” Poletti said to races.com.au.

“He’s got a lengthy campaign coming up and I don’t want to be too hard on him at this stage.”

His most recent win was not quite as impressive as the others but this was a result of a lighter preparation due to him being given the best possible chance of a spring campaign.

The son of Bradbury’s Luck exact spring campaign is still yet to hit paper but regular jockey Shaun O’Donnell said the Cox Plate was a perfect target.

I reckon the Cox Plate is the one Luckygray should be in when entries close early for Melbourne’s main spring races,” he said.

Trainer Gino Poletti hasn’t set any huge goals for Luckgray but has confirmed a first up run in the Group 2 Lawrence Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield on August 18.

“We will give Luckygray a short let-up and his next race will be the Lawrence Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield in mid-August.”

Last year’s Group 1 Railway Stakes was won by Luckygray due to a protest and Poletti has confirmed Luckygray will be back in November to defend his title.
