Manighar Prefers The Plate To The Cup

It will be the star stayer’s maiden attempt at the $3 million Group 1 Sportingbet Cox Plate, Australasia’s weight-for-age championship at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Saturday October 27.

Formally prepared in France by Alain de Royer Dupre and England by Luca Cumani, Manighar is now being trained under the very capable Peter Moody.

Following last spring, Manighar stayed in Australia to be trained by Peter Moody where an autumn campaign was mapped out.

Team Manighar and Moody proved deadly with a first up win in the Group 3 TS Carlyon Cup over 1600m and a third in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes over 1800m.

Manighar proved to punters that Moody can train stayers winning a rare Group 1 treble with wins in the  Australian Cup, Ranvet Stakes and The BMW.

“The Cox Plate is the main goal for him this spring in Australia anyway,” Henderson said to races.com.au.

“I would like to be able to convince Pete (Moody) to put the Japan Cup in there somewhere.

“Clearly it’s going to be hard for Manighar in a race like the Melbourne Cup with the amount of weight he’s going to have to carry but he’s at a great spot at the moment and Pete’s done a great job.”

In current Cox Plate betting Manighar is paying $17 led by unbeaten filly Atlantic Jewel $4.
